Electrical Project Engineer in Upton, NY
January 22, 2008
Job Title: Project Engineer
Career Level: Mid (5-10 yrs)
Required Engineering Major/Field: Electrical
Job Type: Direct
Pay Type: Salary
Maximum Pay: $134,500
Minimum Pay: $90,150
Required Skills: Requires an advanced degree or equivalent capabilities in electrical engineering or physics and ten (10) years experience in the design and analysis of high power RF systems. The candidate must demonstrate expertise with system analysis tolls such as Pspice, MatLAB or equivalent. Expertise with test and measurement equipment, in particular network and spectrum analyzers is required.
General Job Description: Experience with klystron amplifiers and high voltage supplies is highly desirable. Excellent communication skills and the ability to develop detailed technical design and procedures are required. The NSLS-II RF group is responsible for the development of RF systems for a 3 GHz s-band linac, 500 MHz normal conduction cavity for booster synchrotron and superconducting cavity systems for the storage ring. Responsibilities include analysis, design and commissioning of a broad range of RF systems for the NSLS-II complex including S-band linac, 500MHz normal super-conducting cavities powered from 80 - 300kW CW inductive-output-tube (IOT) and klystron amplifiers. The selected candidate will be required to work closely with the electrical and mechanical engineering groups in the integration of the RF systems into the accelerator complex .
Company/Client Profile: Commissioned in 1982, the original National Synchrotron Light Source (NSLS) provides essential scientific tools for 2,500 scientists per year from more than 400 academic, industrial and government institutions. Their myriad research programs produce about 650 publications per year, with more than 125 appearing in ‘premier’ journals. In order for this productivity to continue and even increase, and in order to tackle the “grand challenge” problems of today and especially those of tomorrow, it is essential that the NSLS be upgraded to provide much higher average brightness and higher flux.
NSLS-II is a proposed new state-of-the-art medium energy storage ring designed to deliver world leading brightness and flux with top-off operation for constant output. The facility will be able to produce x-rays up to 10,000 times brighter than those produced at the NSLS today. Brookhaven proposes that the design and engineering of the new light source will begin in 2007, construction in 2009, and operations in 2015.
The superlative character and combination of capabilities will have broad impact on a wide range of disciplines and scientific initiatives in the coming decades, including new studies of small crystals in structural biology, a wide range of nanometer-resolution probes for nanoscience, coherent imaging of the structure and dynamics of disordered materials, greatly increased applicability of inelastic x-ray scattering, and properties of materials under extreme conditions.
